Product Description

A U-shaped hair fork holds a bun by friction and geometry, not by clamping. Twist the hair, push the two prongs down through the base of the twist, rotate, and slide them back up so they lock against the scalp. There is no spring, no hinge, and no metal — nothing that can snap, corrode, or catch. It is the oldest hair fastening in the world and still the one that damages hair least.

Cellulose acetate U-shaped hair fork designs shown in rounded and pointed silhouettes

Two Prongs, Two Silhouettes

The stock shape is a smooth U: parallel prongs with a rounded turn and tapered, polished tips that slide into hair without splitting it. It suits fine to medium hair and disappears into an updo.

The second silhouette has a wavy, scalloped outer edge. The waves are decorative, but they also add grip — each curve gives the hair another point to sit against, which holds a heavier bun. Brands usually take the smooth version for a minimal line and the wavy one for a statement piece; both cut from the same sheet stock on the same equipment.

Cut From Acetate, Which Is Why It Is Smooth

Every hair fork lives or dies on its tips. A rough tip drags and splits hair on the way in, and no amount of styling advice fixes it. Ours are CNC-cut from solid cellulose acetate sheet, then tumble-polished for days — not buffed for minutes — until the tip and both inner edges are glass-smooth. Run a fingernail down the inside of the prong on any sample from any supplier; that is the test.

Acetate is plant-derived, made from wood pulp rather than petroleum, and it is warm to the touch in a way metal and hard plastic are not — noticeable on a piece that sits against the scalp all day.

Tortoiseshell, cream and pearl stock colourways of the acetate hair fork

Stock Colourways

  • Cream with gold flecks — warm ivory with metallic inclusions suspended in the sheet. The bestseller.
  • Pearl white — soft iridescent shimmer, almost no contrast, for bridal and minimal lines.
  • Classic tortoiseshell — amber and deep red-brown layered through the material.

Any pattern in our sheet library can be applied to either silhouette, and the same sheet runs across the rest of the acetate range — so a hair fork, a claw clip and a headband can be produced as a matched collection with identical figuring. See the full library on our cellulose acetate collection page.

Why Buyers Add Hair Forks to a Range

Hair forks have three commercial advantages over clips. They have no moving parts, so returns are close to zero. They are flat and light, so shipping and packaging cost less per unit than a claw clip. And they photograph as an object rather than a mechanism, which suits the quiet-luxury positioning a lot of accessory brands are moving toward.

They also cross into markets clips do not reach — long-hair communities, minimal-waste shoppers, and traditional and ceremonial hairstyling. For adjacent shapes, see our hair pins and sticks range.

Branding a Narrow Profile

There is no flat face on a hair fork, so branding goes on the outer curve of the turn: laser engraving or a small recessed ink-fill mark. Most brands put the logo where it stays visible when the fork is worn — a detail worth specifying, because the alternative is engraving a mark that disappears into the bun.

About Cellulose Acetate

Cellulose acetate is a plant-derived, biodegradable material made from wood pulp or cotton fibers. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, it breaks down naturally over time, making it an eco-friendly choice for premium hair accessories. Its unique properties allow for rich color patterns — from classic tortoiseshell to custom marble effects — that cannot be replicated with standard plastics.

As a manufacturer with 25+ years of experience, EcoHairFactory has mastered the intricate process of cellulose acetate production — from sheet selection and pattern matching to precision cutting and multi-stage hand polishing. Each piece undergoes 8–12 finishing steps to achieve the signature smooth, glossy surface that defines high-end acetate accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

By friction and geometry. Twist the hair, push both prongs down through the base of the twist, rotate, then slide them back up so they lock against the scalp. Nothing clamps, so nothing creases or snaps hair.

A rough tip drags and splits hair on the way in, and styling technique cannot fix it. Ours are tumble-polished for days until the tips and both inner edges are glass-smooth. Run a fingernail down the inside of the prong on any sample — that is the test.

The smooth U disappears into an updo and suits fine to medium hair. The wavy edge is decorative but also adds grip, because each curve gives the hair another point to sit against, so it holds a heavier bun.

Hair forks are a simple flat cut with no hardware, so they run in large batches on the sheet. The 1,000 pcs tier reflects how the material is nested and cut rather than the complexity of the piece.
