Thirty grams is heavy for a hair fork, and on this one it is the specification rather than an accident. Thick hair needs a fork with enough section in it to take the load without flexing, and a fork that flexes is a fork that works its way out over an afternoon.
The prongs on this fork run close to parallel from a broad rounded head, rather than converging into a V. That is the right geometry for a large twist: parallel prongs sit either side of the bulk of the hair and hold by opposing tension, where a narrow V would try to pinch a section that is simply too thick to pinch.
It is also more comfortable. A V head presses on a small area of scalp; the wide U spreads the same load over twice the width. Customers who have given up on hair forks have usually only tried narrow ones.
A hair fork has nothing to break. There is no spring to lose tension, no hinge to seize and no metal to corrode — it holds by friction and by the geometry of the prongs against a twist of hair, and that is the whole mechanism.
It is also why the tips matter more than anything else on the piece. Ours are tumble-polished after cutting, so the prong slides into hair rather than snagging it. A moulded tip has a parting line running down its length, and that line is exactly where hair catches.
