Fourteen centimetres is the length at which a hair fork stops being decorative and starts holding a full bun on its own. Shorter forks look neater in a photograph and fall out of thick hair; this one is cut long enough to pass through the whole twist and come back out the other side, which is the only way the geometry works.
The head on this fork is a narrow V rather than a rounded U, and that changes how it behaves. A V closes the gap between the prongs as they meet the head, so the twist of hair is gripped tighter the further in the fork goes. A U holds the prongs parallel and relies entirely on tension in the hair itself.
The practical result: the V holds better in fine and slippery hair, and the U is more comfortable in very thick hair where a tight grip just fights you. We make both — see the wide U fork for the other half of that pair.
A hair fork has nothing to break. There is no spring to lose tension, no hinge to seize and no metal to corrode — it holds by friction and by the geometry of the prongs against a twist of hair, and that is the whole mechanism.
It is also why the tips matter more than anything else on the piece. Ours are tumble-polished after cutting, so the prong slides into hair rather than snagging it. A moulded tip has a parting line running down its length, and that line is exactly where hair catches.

At this length, yes — 14 cm passes through a full twist and out the other side, which is what makes it hold. A 9 or 10 cm fork will not, whatever it says on the packaging.
The V grips harder as it goes in and suits fine or slippery hair. The U keeps the prongs parallel and is more comfortable in very thick hair. We make both; if you only carry one, the V covers more customers.
