Real tortoiseshell hair ornaments were pierced — cut through with a fretsaw so the shell showed light through the pattern. That is the reference this fork is working from, and it is the reason the openwork goes all the way through the material rather than being an engraved surface.
Cutting all the way through takes more operations and wastes more sheet, and it produces something an engraved piece cannot: the pattern changes as the hair behind it changes. Against dark hair the cut-outs read as dark; against light hair they read light. An engraved surface looks the same against everything.
Every internal edge is polished after cutting. That is the slow part — an openwork piece has several times the edge length of a solid one, and an unpolished internal edge is both visible and sharp against the scalp.
Both run on the same shank tooling, so carrying both costs one extra head tool rather than a second product.
A hair fork has nothing to break. There is no spring to lose tension, no hinge to seize and no metal to corrode — it holds by friction and by the geometry of the prongs against a twist of hair, and that is the whole mechanism.
It is also why the tips matter more than anything else on the piece. Ours are tumble-polished after cutting, so the prong slides into hair rather than snagging it. A moulded tip has a parting line running down its length, and that line is exactly where hair catches.
