Tortoiseshell is the pattern that sells acetate to a customer who has never heard the word acetate. It is also the pattern most often faked — printed onto moulded plastic, where it stops at the surface and gives itself away the moment you look at a cut edge.

Cellulose acetate is built up in layers and laminated into a sheet before anything is cut from it. The tortoiseshell figure is inside the material, not on it. When we cut a clip out of that sheet, the edge shows the same amber and dark brown flowing through the thickness — which is exactly where a printed imitation fails.
It also means every piece is slightly different. The figure moves through the sheet, so a clip cut from one corner does not match one cut from the other. This is normal and it is what customers who know the material are paying for, but it is worth warning your own QC team before the first bulk inspection.

All five come off the same cutting profile, so carrying the full set costs no extra tooling — only sheet. It is the cheapest way we know to make a five-SKU range look deliberately curated rather than thin.

The base is a plated gold alligator clip, riveted rather than glued. On this profile the gold is doing real work: it picks up the amber in the sheet and makes the pattern read warmer than it does against silver. If your range needs silver, antique brass or matte black we can supply all three, but for classic tortoiseshell we would push you towards gold.
Laser engraving on the reverse is the usual route on this shape — legible on the dark ground, invisible when worn. Hot foil in gold also works well on the lighter patterns. Full material specifications are on our materials page, and the wider acetate collection shows what else runs in the same sheet.
The same tortoiseshell sheets cut into other shapes: the 9 cm bar barrette for a longer, flatter plate, and the slim willow duckbill for a narrower leaf on a silver-tone base. MOQ is 500 pcs per design. Send your reference to our OEM team for a quote within 24 hours.
Make this product your own. Every detail is customizable for orders meeting the MOQ.
Laser engraving, hot stamping, silk screen printing, or UV printing on product body and handle.
Pantone color matching. For acetate: custom tortoiseshell, marble, and unique pattern designs.
Modify dimensions or create entirely new shapes. 2,000+ existing molds or develop new ones.
Kraft boxes, velvet pouches, blister packs, retail-ready display cards. Your brand on every package.
These are the stock colours this shape runs in. Any Pantone reference can be matched on top of them — colour is mixed into the material, not sprayed on the surface, so it never chips or fades.
Send a Pantone code or a physical reference and we will match it on the sample before bulk. See the full pattern library →
Packaging is produced alongside the product and ships as one order. Printed packaging carries its own lead time, so tell us early which route you want.

Samples from an existing mould ship against a sample fee that is credited back against your first bulk order. Custom-tooled samples are quoted case by case.
Bulk production starts once the pre-production sample is approved in writing. Reorders of a running design are faster, because tooling and colour are already set.
FOB, CIF, DAP and DDP are all available, by sea or by air, from Shenzhen or Guangzhou. DDP is the simplest route for a first order.
Cellulose acetate is a plant-derived, biodegradable material made from wood pulp or cotton fibers. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, it breaks down naturally over time, making it an eco-friendly choice for premium hair accessories. Its unique properties allow for rich color patterns — from classic tortoiseshell to custom marble effects — that cannot be replicated with standard plastics.
As a manufacturer with 25+ years of experience, EcoHairFactory has mastered the intricate process of cellulose acetate production — from sheet selection and pattern matching to precision cutting and multi-stage hand polishing. Each piece undergoes 8–12 finishing steps to achieve the signature smooth, glossy surface that defines high-end acetate accessories.
No. The pattern is laminated through the acetate sheet before the shape is cut, so it runs all the way through the thickness. That is why the edges show the pattern too, and why a scratch does not reveal a different colour underneath. Printed tortoiseshell always gives itself away at the edge.
Because they are cut from five different sheets. Tortoiseshell is not one pattern but a family — the amber-and-black classic, a cream ground, a monochrome version, a grey-pink, and a dark near-solid. Carrying more than one is the cheapest way to make a small range look considered.
No, and that is the material behaving correctly. The pattern flows through the sheet, so every clip cut from it lands on a slightly different part of the figure. Buyers who have only sourced moulded plastic sometimes flag this as a defect on first sample — it is worth setting the expectation with your own QC before bulk.
Yes. Stock is plated gold. Silver, antique brass and matte black are all available, and on larger runs we can plate to a nominated spec.
