Tortoiseshell is the one pattern that never leaves this category. Shapes rotate every season — rectangles one year, sculptural loops the next — but a buyer who stocks claw clips at all stocks a tortoiseshell one, because it sells to a customer who does not think of herself as buying a trend. What changes between suppliers is not the colour. It is whether the pattern is in the material or printed on top of it.

The Pattern Runs Through the Sheet

Our tortoiseshell is laminated cellulose acetate: sheets of amber, honey and near-black are pressed together, then the blank is cut from the block. The mottling you see on the face continues through the full thickness of the material and out the other side.

That gives a buyer a test that takes two seconds and needs no equipment. Look at the side of a tooth. On a laminated acetate clip the tortoiseshell carries around the edge and through the tooth. On a printed or sprayed clip the tooth is a flat solid colour, because the decoration only ever touched the top surface. The same check tells you what happens after six months in a handbag: laminated pattern cannot wear off, sprayed pattern can and does.

It also means no two pieces are identical, which is worth writing into your product copy rather than apologising for. Buyers who have seen the alternative read slight variation as proof the material is real.

Four Tortoiseshell Sheets, Not One

“Tortoiseshell” covers a family of sheets, and picking the wrong one for your market is the most common mis-order we correct at sampling:

• Dark tortoiseshell. Near-black ground with amber breaking through. The classic, and the safest choice for a brand selling into a dark-hair market — it reads as an accessory, not as hair.
• Blonde tortoiseshell. Honey ground with sparse dark flecks. Disappears into light and mid-blonde hair, which is why it consistently outsells the dark version in Northern Europe and the US.
• Amber. Warm orange-brown, dense mottling, the most obviously “material” of the four. Photographs best.
• Chestnut. Red-brown, quieter than amber. The one to pick when the shape itself is the statement and the pattern should not compete.

Thirteen Shapes, One Sheet Library

We currently tool thirteen claw clip shapes in tortoiseshell, from an 8.5 cm bow-top clip up to a 13.5 cm hooked banana. The range covers the plain arc, the open-work crescent, the scalloped wave-tooth jaw, the geometric rectangular frame, and the hooked banana profile that has carried the category for three seasons.

Because the shape and the sheet are separate decisions, you are not limited to the pairings shown here. Any shape in our full claw clip catalogue can be cut from any tortoiseshell sheet we hold, at the same 500 pcs minimum. Size Changes the Spring, Not Just the Body

The obvious difference between a 13.5 cm clip and an 8.5 cm one is how much hair it takes. The difference that actually generates returns is spring tension, and it does not scale automatically with the body.

A long clip on thick hair needs a stronger spring or it gapes at the ends and slides out during the day. Put that same strong spring in a small clip and it becomes painful to open and snaps shut hard enough to damage fine hair. We specify tension per size rather than per shape — tell us the hair type you are designing for and we set it on the sample so you can feel it before the bulk run.

Ordering and Customisation

Minimum is 500 pcs per design, and mixed tortoiseshell sheets of one shape share that minimum. Logos go on by recessed ink-fill, hot foil or laser engraving — on a busy pattern like tortoiseshell, foil and engraving read more clearly than ink, which tends to disappear into the mottling.
