A French barrette is the clip most people picture when they hear “hair barrette” — a decorative plate on top, a hinged spring bar underneath that snaps shut in a single motion. The shape has stayed in production since the 1930s while trends around it came and went, which is why it is one of the few hair accessory shapes a brand can carry as a permanent line rather than a season.
We cut this barrette in two silhouettes off the same hardware. The pointed oval tapers at both ends and sits slightly proud of the hair — it is the more decorative read, and it photographs well flat-on, which matters for boxed and gift lines. The rounded bar is a straight-sided rectangle with softened corners: quieter, easier to stack in a multipack, and the profile that usually carries volume.

These are cut from cellulose acetate sheet, not moulded and sprayed. The practical consequence is what happens at the edges: because the colour is in the material rather than on it, a scratch or a knock does not expose a different colour underneath. On a clip that lives in a handbag, that is the difference between a product that looks a year old after a month and one that does not.
Stock colourways are classic tortoiseshell, pearl white and blush pink, with champagne and dark brown available from current sheet. Any pattern in our library can be cut into either profile — the ten patterns shown on our wide-tooth comb all run in this shape.
Two things break a barrette in the field rather than on the shelf. The first is spring tension set without reference to hair type: a bar sprung for fine hair splays open on thick hair, and a bar sprung for thick hair will not close on fine. We specify tension separately from shape, so tell us the hair type you are designing for and we will match it on the sample.
The second is the join between plate and bar. On cheap barrettes the metal is glued into a shallow channel and works loose. Ours is riveted through the acetate, which is slower to make and does not come apart. It is the single detail worth paying for on this shape.
The plate takes recessed ink-fill, hot foil stamping and laser engraving. On a barrette the back of the plate is the honest place for a logo — visible when the clip is off the head and in the hand, invisible when it is worn. We also produce printed backing cards and polybags to your artwork, which is usually what a first order actually needs.

Bulk production starts once the pre-production sample is approved in writing. Reorders of a running design are faster, because tooling and colour are already set.

The hinged spring bar. A decorative plate sits on top of the hair and a sprung metal bar snaps closed underneath it, clamping a thick section in one motion. A snap clip bends a single strip of metal instead, which is why it holds less hair and loosens faster.
