Product Description

“Pearl barrette” means two different products, and buyers use the phrase for both. One is a barrette cut from pearlescent acetate, where the shimmer is in the material. The other is a barrette with pearls set into it. We make both, and this page covers both, because sending a buyer to the wrong one wastes an enquiry.

Three acetate French barrettes in the rounded bar profile standing upright on white — pale pink pearl, brown tortoiseshell and white pearl — each on a gold hinged spring bar

Pearl Acetate: The Shimmer Is in the Sheet

Pearlescent acetate is cast with mica suspended through the material rather than sprayed onto the surface. That is the whole difference, and it shows up in two places a buyer will check.

First, the edge. A sprayed pearl finish stops at the edge and shows a plain core; cast pearlescent sheet carries the same shimmer right through, so a chipped or cut edge looks the same as the face. Second, depth — light enters the sheet, bounces off mica at different levels and comes back out, which is why a cast pearl barrette shifts as the head turns and a sprayed one does not.

It is also why no two pieces are identical. The mica settles differently in every pour. Worth saying on your packaging rather than treating as a defect.

Four Pearl Grounds

  • Pearl white. The cleanest of the four and the one that reads as mother-of-pearl. The bridal and occasion colour.
  • Pearl cream. Warmer, with a faint gold cast. Suits blonde and grey hair where pearl white can look stark.
  • Pale pink pearl. The everyday version — soft enough to wear to work, which stops the range being seasonal.
  • Champagne. The deepest, closest to a metallic. The one that carries a gold-toned range.

Pearl-Set: Beads, Not Finish

The other reading. Here the pearls are separate beads set into the acetate, and how they are set decides whether the piece survives a handbag.

We seat every bead in a channel or a drilled recess cut before polishing, so each pearl is held on three sides with only the crown exposed. The cheap alternative is gluing beads to a flat face, which photographs identically and starts shedding in month two. If you are comparing quotes and one is materially cheaper, this is usually where the difference is.

Resin pearls are stock, with a coated finish. Glass pearls run too and add weight and cost. Freshwater pearls we do not recommend on a barrette — the drilling tolerance varies too much for a channel setting to sit flush.

Four Shapes Across Both Readings

  • Rounded bar, 9 cm. The volume shape. Long enough to hold a section across the back of the head rather than just decorate one.
  • Tapered oval. The classic French profile, and the one most buyers picture when they say barrette.
  • Willow leaf, 7.5 cm. A tapered leaf that takes a crystal or metal motif well — see the willow-leaf crystal barrette.
  • Pearl-edged clip, 7.6 cm. Pearls set along the outer edge rather than clustered — the pearl-edged hair clip.

Mechanisms

Hinged spring bar on the bar and oval profiles, snap bar on the shorter pieces. Both are riveted through the acetate rather than glued. A glued bar is the single most common failure on a cheap barrette, and it is not a spec worth saving money on when the whole piece is being sold on the quality of the material.

Specification

Bar profile 9.0 × 1.0 × 1.0 cm at 10 g; oval and willow profiles 7.5 cm at 30 g; pearl-edged clip 7.6 × 3.1 × 1.7 cm at 8 g. Pearl size and spacing on the set pieces are specifiable at no tooling cost. For the shell equivalent of this page see the 9 cm tortoiseshell bar barrette.

MOQ is 500 pcs per design. Browse the rest of the clip and barrette range, or send your brief to our OEM team for a quote within 24 hours.

About Cellulose Acetate

Cellulose acetate is a plant-derived, biodegradable material made from wood pulp or cotton fibers. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, it breaks down naturally over time, making it an eco-friendly choice for premium hair accessories. Its unique properties allow for rich color patterns — from classic tortoiseshell to custom marble effects — that cannot be replicated with standard plastics.

As a manufacturer with 25+ years of experience, EcoHairFactory has mastered the intricate process of cellulose acetate production — from sheet selection and pattern matching to precision cutting and multi-stage hand polishing. Each piece undergoes 8–12 finishing steps to achieve the signature smooth, glossy surface that defines high-end acetate accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cast. The mica is suspended through the sheet, so a cut or chipped edge shows the same shimmer as the face. A sprayed finish stops at the surface and shows a plain core the moment it is damaged.

No. Every bead sits in a channel or a drilled recess cut before polishing, so it is held on three sides with only the crown exposed. Beads glued to a flat face photograph the same and start shedding in month two.

No, and that is inherent to cast pearlescent acetate — the mica settles differently in every pour. It is worth saying on your packaging rather than treating as a defect, because it is the same argument that sells the material.

We would advise against it on a barrette. Drilling tolerance on freshwater pearls varies too much for a channel setting to sit flush. Resin is stock and glass runs well if you want the weight.
