Pastel hair clips usually arrive one of two ways: moulded plastic in flat opaque colours, or acetate in glossy candy shades. This one is neither. The acetate is frosted back to a semi-translucent finish so the colour reads as depth rather than as paint, and the spring base is coated to match the body instead of being left bright metal.
On almost every duckbill clip on the market the alligator base is bright gold or silver. On a tortoiseshell or black clip that is fine — it reads as hardware. On a mint or lilac clip it is the first thing the eye lands on, and it makes the piece look like two parts stuck together.
Colouring the base to the body costs a separate finishing pass and it is why this clip photographs the way it does. If you are building a range that lives on Instagram before it lives on a shelf, it is the detail that does the work.
Because acetate is coloured in the sheet, a custom pastel means pouring a custom sheet rather than mixing a spray. That carries a sheet minimum rather than a piece minimum, so it is worth asking for the figure before you commit to a shade that is close to but not exactly one of the six.
The matte surface is sanded back from a polished finish, not sprayed on. Nothing has been added to the material, which means there is no coating to chip at the edges and no finish to wear off at the pressure points where the clip is handled. It also hides fingerprints — a glossy pastel clip on a retail display looks handled after a weekend, and this one does not.
This is a sectioning and styling profile: half-up twists, pinning a fringe back, holding a section during a blow-dry. It is not built to hold a full head of thick hair, and we would rather say so than have it come back. For weight-bearing styles, our claw clip range is the right place to look.
